The Department of Forensic Medicine is a specialized branch within the field of medical science that focuses on the application of medical knowledge to legal issues. This department plays a critical role in the investigation of deaths, injuries, and diseases in various legal contexts. The Department of FM&T at Govt. Medical College Anantnag has been in operation since 2019. The department’s first faculty member, Dr. Azia Manzoor Bhat, joined as an Assistant Professor and assumed the responsibility as in-charge Head of the Department. Under his guidance and leadership, the department progressed on the path of development. MBBS teaching, as well as training for SR, JR, and tutors, has taken place and continues in the department. Special training classes were also taken for III Year MBBS Students to deal with Medico-legal Cases and Radiological Age Estimation. The department’s clinical forensic medicine services have been provided with the responsibility of legal issues associated with people visiting GMC Anantnag for diagnosis, management, and treatment.

Our vision is to be a recognized leader in forensic medicine all over the country, dedicated to advancing the science of forensic investigation, promoting justice, and enhancing public health. We strive to achieve this through excellence in education, research, and clinical practice.
(1) To implement advanced technologies and methodologies in order to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. (2) Conduct pioneering research. (3) Provide high-quality education to MBBS students through curriculum implementation, interactive teaching methods, clinical exposure and assessment and feedback. (4) Deliver an enriching and comprehensive internship experience in forensic medicine that equips students with practical skills and professional competence. (5) Deliver quality educational and training programmes, CME, Workshops etc.
(1) The Department wants to start clinical Forensic Medicine unit in causality which requires trained Medical officers & Residents who will work 24 × 7. (2) Toxicology Lab & Museum yet to establish due to shortfall of immovable furniture at Dialgam. (3) Establishment of Poison Information Centre & Virtual Autopsy Centre at GMC Anantnag.
