Government Medical College, Anantnag, J&K.

The Department of ENT, Head and Neck Surgery was started in January 2019 as a speciality in managing ENT, Head and Neck diseases in the Tertiary Care Teaching Institution of Govt. Medical College Anantnag. Besides patient-care the Department engages in teaching the undergraduate and the postgraduate students and residents and is also actively involved in medical research in ENT, Head and Neck disorders.

Hearing and balance disorders which are treated here include the suppurative ear disease, congenital hearing disorders, acquired sensorineural hearing loss, tumours afflicting the middle ear and the internal ear, otosclerosis, vertigo of different origins, and facial nerve disorders. Diseases of nose and paranasal sinuses which are managed here include acute and chronic suppurative and allergic pathologies, neoplastic lesions, congenital disorders causing nasal obstruction or external nasal deformities, tuberculosis and other chronic granulomatous disorders. Throat diseases which are treated include the voice disorders, speech disorders, dysphagia, airway obstruction of any cause and benign and malignant lesions of pharynx and larynx. ENT services also include head and neck malignancies, skull base tumours and tuberculosis of neck. The emergency services include the management of obstructed airway, epistaxis, head and neck trauma, balance disorders and sudden deafness.

The Department is in its establishment phase at present, however, under the umbrella of highly responsive college administration it made rapid progress from the very start viz. January 2019 in many fields including procuring Zeiss operating microscope, Functional endoscopic sinus surgery equipment, Evoked potential system and two Temporal bone laboratories. The Department has a separate ENT Theatre with hydraulic operating tables and many other sets of instruments. The Department is blessed with a highly talented faculty and other staff who are striving hard to ensure efficient patient care, medical research, and teaching the undergrauated students and residents; and is geared up for implementing theoretical, clinical and operating teaching programmes for DNB very soon.

The Department is very soon organizing a state level conference on "The Management of Chronic Rhinosinusitsis including the role of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery". Besides, to stay competitive the Senior Residents and Junior Residents participate in seminars, journal clubs and case presentations regularly
